Most of the statistics come from the Justice Information System and the Courts Administration Authority computer systems. The statistics presented address five main areas: offenses reported or becoming known to the police and alleged offenders apprehended, criminal matters finalized in magistrates' courts, criminal matters finalized in the Supreme and district criminal courts, adult offenders subject to programs administered by the Department of Correctional Services, and juvenile justice. Statistics on juvenile justice address formal cautions by police, appearances by juveniles at family conferences, appearances by juveniles before the Youth Court, and juveniles in custody. The number of crimes reported or becoming known to police in 1994 decreased by 3 percent over the previous year, amounting to 207,392 offenses. During 1994 there were 38,624 criminal matters finalized in the magistrates courts, and in the higher courts the number of cases declined by 5.9 percent, although the number of cases in the Supreme Court increased by 50, partially offsetting a 10.4 percent decline in the district court. Daily average inmate number increased by 156 between 1993 (1,149 inmates) and 1994 (1,305 inmates). During 1994 there were 9,661 young offenders dealt with by police, and there were 1,110 family conference cases.
