Statistics were derived from three information sources: (1) Daily Population Movement Reports compiled by correctional facilities; (2) inmate data entered into the Correctional Information System by correctional facilities; and (3) annual reports of the Hawaii Paroling Authority. Between 1990-1991 and 1993-1994, the combined prison and jail population in Hawaii increased by 21.4 percent, from 2,673 to 3,246. During the same period, the statewide total of sentenced felons grew by 14.6 percent, from 1,533 to 1,757. The proportion of male sentenced felons varied between 92.4 and 93.9 percent, while the share of females fluctuated between 6.1 and 7.6 percent. Sentenced felons between 30 and 34 years of age consistently comprised the largest proportion of all age groups. The number of prison inmates increased by 19.5 percent over the period, from 1,719 to 2,054. This increase largely resulted from a 60.8 percent rise in the number of admissions from 924 to 1,486. The number of technical violators fluctuated over the period, ranging from 186 to 306 inmates. Detailed statistical data are provided on prison admissions and discharges.
