This video, accompanied by a study guide for users, is one of five videos designed to increase awareness of cultural diversity among those who work with African-Americans, Asian/Pacific-Americans, Chicano/Latino-Americans, and Native- Americans; this video profiles the cultural differences among Asian/Pacific Americans and discusses how this impacts the institutions and agencies that serve these people.
Abstract
The format for the video consists of comments and insights by Asian/Pacific-Americans regarding the diverse cultures and historical experiences of this population. Many of those interviewed note that to the dominant white culture Asian/Pacific people look alike and have stereotypical values and behaviors. They advise that there are significant differences among Asian/Pacific Americans based not only in the different countries, cultures, and family experiences from which they come, but also based in whether or not they were born in or immigrated to the United States. Regarding the provision of government services to Asian/Pacific people, one person advises that before developing policy for a particular case or family, a cultural professional should be consulted for advice on how to tailor services to a particular family based on their culture and background experiences. Rather than attempting to change traditional cultural behaviors and values, service-providers should respect them and adapt their services accordingly. The study guide provides materials and guidelines for training based on the video. For other videos in the series, see NCJ-158615-16 and NCJ-158618-19.
