The status of feminist criminology in Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Finland is reviewed in terms of feminist theory, the existence and number of researchers involved in feminist perspectives, courses and seminars that deal with social control issues from a feminist viewpoint, and feminist works in the field of criminology.
Abstract
The transnational study of feminist criminology in the four countries notes adversities associated with and challenges to feminist criminology, as reflected in feminist theory in criminology teaching and research. Limits of criminology are examined, and the author indicates that criminology and feminism are in a state of revolution. Four lessons learned from the study of feminist criminology in Northern Europe are identified: (1) studies done from a feminist perspective on social control issues do not have to take place in criminology centers; (2) studies done by feminist criminologists do not always have a bearing on social control issues; (3) studies done by feminist criminologists may not always use critical perspectives derived from feminism because the study objective may not call for that kind of interpretation; and (4) a critical number of feminists must be in one place for feminist criminology to exist and flourish. 10 references and 4 notes
