This volume presents 120 fact sheets displaying information about the nature and extent of drug abuse and mental illness in the United States; the impacts on the economic, health care, and welfare systems; the characteristics of clients in specialized drug and mental health treatment facilities; and funding sources and expenditures for mental health and drug abuse prevention and treatment.
Abstract
The fact sheets emphasize data collected in the 1990's, but include older data and trends for some topics. Each fact sheet is a page of statistics that can stand alone. Each fact sheet presents a question, answer, and available statistics with an illustrative figure or map. The answers were written for the reader who is not a statistician. The data sources are cited on each fact sheet. Individual tables focus on the total dollars spend or lost due to a mental health or drug abuse disorder; incidence of problems by age, race, and gender; percentages of persons with dual diagnosis of drug abuse and mental disorders; drug use among jail inmates; trends in AIDS cases associated with injecting drug use; and preventable deaths attributed to alcohol, drug use, and other behavioral factors.
