The Board exists and operates under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act that was passed July 16, 1970, and provides that injured victims of crime, or their dependents, be eligible for benefits in an amount similar to workers under the Workers Compensation Act. After providing general information on the criteria for receiving claims applications and dispensing compensation, this report presents statistical data on the Board's activity for fiscal year 1994. One table documents the disposition of claims for the period April 1, 1993, to March 31, 1994. There were 114 claims held over from the previous year, pending further police, court, medical, and employment information. Another table records the type of claim approved, followed by tabular data that provides a breakdown of "other benefit costs" paid for the period April 1, 1993, to March 31, 1994. A table presents the results of an analysis of claims benefits paid for a 10-year period from 1985. This documents temporary and permanent disability payments, rehabilitation cash benefits, and other benefit costs. A fifth table presents information on the number of claims processed over a 10-year period. Reasons for rejecting claims are explained. Four figures illustrate the ages of the victims for which claims have been filed and the employment and income status of the applicants; compare victims' sex for claims filed; and show the crime- occurrence area of the Province for which claims have been filed.
