Three chapters provide detailed statistics on notifiable offenses recorded by the police in England and Wales. The number of notifiable offenses recorded by the police in 1994 was 5.3 million, 5 percent lower than in 1993. This was the second consecutive drop in the annual figures, and in percentage terms, it equalled that of 1988. The majority of crimes were property offenses (burglary, theft, fraud and forgery, criminal damage, and arson), as they accounted for 4.9 million or 93 percent of all crime. The number of clearances dropped in 1994 by less than 1 percent to 1.3 million offenses, Overall, the clearance rate increased from 25 percent in 1993 to 26 percent in 1994. Receipts of cases in magistrates' courts showed little change in 1994, having decreased by approximately 7 percent in 1993. The proportion of defendants, aged 18 or over, proceeded against for indictable offenses who were committed for trial at the Crown Court remained at 20 percent in 1994, decreasing from 24 percent in 1989.
