A 1995 conference held in Belfast, Northern Ireland focused the impacts of the longstanding violence in Northern Ireland on youth development; the role of the judiciary in dealing with these youth; models for dealing with juveniles growing up in areas of conflict; and implications for education, training, and youth policy in Northern Ireland, Europe, and elsewhere.
Abstract
Participants included judges and magistrates from 23 countries on four continents. The presentations and discussions focused on current socioeconomic conditions in Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland legal system, the psychological and social impacts of Northern Ireland's conflicts on young people, criminal justice policies in the different parts of the United Kingdom, the role of community-based corrections, issues related to serious juvenile offenders, and public attitudes toward juvenile offenders. Further discussions focused on the impact of the Children Order, court proceedings, four youth programs, and ideas and experiences from other countries.
