State corrections agencies were surveyed regarding their drug treatment programs for offenders, with emphasis on the proportion of inmates needing treatment who are receiving it, the methods of identifying inmates who need drug treatment, the methods of coordinating inmate profile data with treatment, and the types of treatment programs provided.
Abstract
Results revealed that agencies varied widely in the proportion of inmates needing drug treatment who actually received it. Although three jurisdictions indicated that more than 90 percent of inmates needing treatment received it, four States provided treatment to 10 percent or fewer of inmates assessed as in need of treatment. A majority of States were able to provide treatment to less than 40 percent of those who needed it. States also varied in the degree to which they relied on objective screening instruments who needed drug treatment. Treatment programs ranged from minimal to long-term, intensive inpatient programs. The majority of agencies offer self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, education programs, and group counseling. Tables
