Officials from the Department of Defense (DOD), the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Customs Service presented testimony on the Federal drug interdiction program. The opening statement cited the interdiction pressure applied along the U.S. border with Mexico to deter drug smuggling and also considered drug smuggling routes for cocaine and heroin, drug seizures, and DOD resources spent on drug interdiction. Hearing witnesses looked at recent drug trafficking trends, various drug interdiction strategies, and accomplishments of the Federal drug interdiction program. In addition, testimony was provided on the military's role in drug law enforcement, DOD's counternarcotics program, U.S. military assistance to counternarcotics forces in Latin American countries, drug demand reduction, training for law enforcement personnel, and drug research. 4 tables and 5 figures
