Abstract
The rules of law presented are based on decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court, which have national application. Rules may vary in some States. Rules are stated from the perspective of an officer on duty. The sections pertinent to patrol focus on patrol generally, consensual contact, dog sniffs, investigative detention, protective frisk, and vehicle stops. Topics related to arrest are arrest procedures, the authority to arrest, the arrest warrant, arrest in a public place, arrest in private premises, the use of force, and search incident to arrest. In discussing search and seizure, the guide considers probable cause, property subject to seizure, search of premises, the search warrant, securing the premises, search with consent, plain view, emergency, administrative search or inspection, search of persons, and search of various sites. Other major sections of the police guide address suspect identification, interrogation, undercover investigation, and asset forfeiture.
