The countries involved in the study are Australia (New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia), Canada, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Sweden, England and Wales, and Scotland. In some countries, volunteers have an important role in the probation service, not only in relieving the pressure of work on probation officers but also in stimulating community participation in criminal justice and facilitating the reintegration of offenders in the community. A table summarizes the type of use made within the 11 countries. Only three systems make no use of volunteers -- New South Wales, Hungary, and Israel. Of the nine systems that do make use of volunteers, seven have statutory provision for the use of volunteers. A second table summarizes the benefits that accrue to volunteers in the different systems, and another table shows the criteria for eligibility as a volunteer. 3 tables
