This study used data from 601 citizens of Leflore County, Mississippi, who participated in telephone interviews assessing their opinions on the role of police officers as residents of the community and the impact of this role on their ability to prevent crime from occurring.
Abstract
About 65 percent of the respondents had been crime victims. Eighty-one percent of the sample agreed to having police officers live and work in their community. White males were more likely than black males to want the police to reside within the community. Ninety-six percent wanted police officers to become involved in community activities; these results were significantly associated with race and gender. Respondents wanted police to become part of the community in order to prevent crime from occurring and to safeguard their property from theft and burglary. 5 tables and 34 references
