In 1994, 17,487 Crime Index offenses were reported by local police agencies; this is a 2-percent decrease from the 17,875 reported in 1993. Crime Index offenses include murder/non- negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft. The Crime Index rate per 100,000 population for 1994 was 2,740.9, compared to the 1993 rate of 2,815.0. There were 528 violent crimes reported (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault), a 5.2-percent decrease from 1993. Violent crime accounted for 3 percent of the total Index Crimes reported in 1994. Collectively, property crimes (burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft decreased by 2 percent, from 17,317 reported in 1993 to 16,959 reported in 1994. Ninety-seven percent of Index Crimes reported were property crimes. The 13,898 larceny/thefts reported in 1994 accounted for 79 percent of total Index Crimes. Over $9.6 million worth of property was reported lost to crime in 1994, with 48 percent of that amount reported as recovered by law enforcement officials.
