Television has become a very powerful influence in society, and the idea of the DETC network is to reach inmates who may not have the skills or the motivation to participate in a structured educational program but do have the opportunity to watch a significant amount of television and be influenced by a positive message. The focus of programming for the DETC network will be to help inmates develop a positive role relative to work, family, and society. Inmates will benefit by participating in a self-help process designed to change their lifestyle and values. The DETC network will also help inmates attain the skills needed to be responsible community members, increase their employability, and enhance positive behavior and thinking skills. Suggested topic areas include drug abuse education, domestic violence awareness, positive parenting issues, violence reduction, health promotion and risk reduction, communicable disease prevention, conflict mediation and resolution, preparation for employment, adult basic literacy, English as a second language, cultural awareness, informational programs, and sports specials. The potential audience and impact of the DETC project are examined.
