Intended to serve as an action plan and resource guide for rural, suburban, and urban school communities, this violence prevention project aims to promote productive collaboration among stakeholders to reduce juvenile violence.
Abstract
The plan includes suggested areas for institution and curriculum development, possible staff and student courses and workshops, model in-school violence prevention programs, and training options for school personnel, students, parents, and community members. It notes that, nationwide, 100,000 students carry guns to school every day, 160,000 students skip classes because of fear of physical harm, and 6,250 teachers are physically attacked. Violence has also occurred in New York in urban, suburban, and rural schools. Prevention and early intervention strategies include student empowerment, school climate efforts, positive teacher- student relationships, reduction of drug abuse, diversity training, conflict resolution, and many others. Recommended actions are suggested for each target group: the community at large, the school staff, students, and families.
