This was a 4.8-percent increase over 1993. Violent offenses amounted to 13.8 percent of the total number of offenses in 1994; a total of 561 murders occurred in the State, a decrease of 4.4 percent over 1993. There were 1,780 forcible rapes reported in 1994. Property offenses composed 86.2 percent of the total 1994 Crime Index. There were 228,901 Property Index offenses reported in 1994, an increase of 5.5 percent compared to 1993.
