The strategy involved collaboration between the police as the lead agency and the local government, Victim Support, and Huddersfield University. It consisted of graduated responses to victims based on the number of previous reported and unreported victimizations. Among the responses were the installation of a silent alarm for 6 weeks and a visit to the burglarized premises by a crime prevention officer. The project will continue until March 1994. During its first nine months, the project has reduced of residential burglary by 24 percent and other burglary by 5 percent and increased arrests resulting from temporary alarms from 4 percent of installations to 14 percent. It has also improved the quality of service to victims. The data do not indicate that residential burglary has increased in areas adjacent to those in which the project has been the most successful. The data indicate the need to focus more effort on schools. In addition, the strategy has had little impact on vehicle crime so far. A complete evaluation will be prepared at the project's conclusion. Tables
