The three sections of this document include single-page abstracts, presented alphabetically by principal author and indexed by a set of appropriate keywords; the keyword index; and the reference section, with abstracted articles listed in alphabetical order by author. The research results show that a community-based approach is one of the most effective strategies for preventing drug abuse among rural juveniles and for keeping drugs out of the schools. Alcohol and other drug prevention programs need to be implemented among very young children; one-third of rural children have had their first alcoholic drink by the age of 10. Peer education appears to be an important prevention education strategy. Holistic program approaches will consider students' physical, academic, emotional, and social needs, and will involve families in program planning and implementation.
