This report summarizes the available research related to alcohol and other drug use among American Indian youth.
Abstract
In the first section, the findings of these studies will be reviewed on a drug-by-drug basis, ranging from alcohol and tobacco, to marijuana, inhalants, stimulants and cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin. The second section discusses drug use correlates and risk factors, focusing on socioeconomic status, risk factor exposure, cultural identity, family and school influences, peer influences, alternative activities, psychological profiles, and religious identification. The final section describes published prevention program evaluations and discusses the components of successful programs targeting Native American adolescents. The document contains abstracts of these studies.
