There are several important reasons for including parent education programs in a comprehensive AOD prevention program: good parenting equates to good prevention, family-related factors place students at risk for drug use, family life can be stressful, and family influence is a powerful force. Parent education, however, is only one component of a parent involvement plan. Guidelines are presented for selecting and implementing a parent education curriculum. Several parent education curricula are described that focus on active parenting of teenagers, communication skills for families, survival skill training, and effective parenting for black and Hispanic families. For each curriculum, information is provided on format, content, training, materials, and costs.
