Reported crime in Australia has been increasing for the last several years, and surveys and public opinion polls demonstrate a high degree of citizen concern; in response, this article compares crime levels in Australian cities with those of other international cities.
Abstract
Compared to cities in Germany and the United States, cities in Australia and the United Kingdom show the lowest homicide rates, and cities in the United States have the highest robbery rates. Cities in Germany and Australia have much lower motor vehicle theft rates than other cities. In all cities, the number of juveniles sent to institutions has been declining since 1981. The imprisonment rate in Australia has been increasing gradually since 1985. The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody was established in 1991 in response to an increase in aboriginal deaths in custody. Since 1991, the number of deaths in police lockups and related facilities has declined. Finally, drug statistics for Australia indicate that most drug offenses involve marijuana. 7 figures
