This video dramatizes wrong and right ways to protect oneself from street crime while abroad, with attention to purse- snatching, entrance into the home under false pretenses, and abduction.
Abstract
All of the dramatizations are in Paris, France. The first involves a purse-snatching. In the dramatization of how to invite the crime, the woman is distracted by not knowing the French necessary to make a simple purchase, and she is noticed by a purse snatcher. The woman fails to observe that she is being watched as a potential target. The opportunity for the purse- snatching occurs as she turns down a deserted alley. The dramatization of correct security measures shows the woman conversing in French, securing her purse, looking around as she walks down the street, and remaining on streets that are well- traveled. The second dramatization involves a thief pretending to be a maintenance person to gain entrance into a home. In the dramatization of poor security measures, the woman resident easily admits the man and then leaves him alone in her bedroom to check the telephone. While he is alone in the room, he searches her drawers and steals some jewelry. The dramatization of correct security procedures involves a request for identification, a call to the service company to ensure the employee is legitimate, and remaining with the employee while he does his work. The third dramatization involves an abduction of an influential American living abroad. The security advice emphasized is variance in routine to confuse any engaged in surveillance and observation to determine whether surveillance is occurring. The video title, "Color Me Yellow," refers to a security color code in which yellow symbolizes being alert and aware of who is in the immediate environment and what their behavior may signify.
