The report covers laboratory type, size, personnel composition, and expenditures; types of law enforcement agencies submitting suspected controlled substances for analysis; types of drugs identified; and average turnaround time for analysis completion. The report found that crime laboratories received approximately 320,000 requests for analysis of suspected controlled substances in 1988; 55 percent of these requests were made by municipal agencies. Laboratories analyzed 566,734 suspected controlled substances in 1988; 49 percent of the substances identified were marijuana and 29 percent were cocaine. Average turnaround time for completion of a drug analysis was less than 2 weeks for more than 50 percent of the laboratories. In 1988, the laboratories spent more than $18 million, more than $2 million of which went toward the purchase of analysis equipment. 2 figures, 9 tables, 6 references, and 2 appendixes
