The 16 countries are Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Maldive, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Tables and figures show how many of each of the four offenses were reported to the police in 1990 for each of the 16 countries. The rates for each offense are also shown for 1990. Graphs show the rates for each of the four offenses from 1975 to 1990. Other tables present the number of inmates in each country for each of the years 1986, 1988, and 1990. The number of inmates per 100,000 general population are also presented. In addition to presenting tabular and graphic data on offenses and inmate populations, the paper also discusses the importance of information on crime in the national context, how crime data are used in some countries, and international cooperation and information exchange. The author cautions against using the data for comparison purposes among countries because of lack of uniformity in legal systems, in statistical classifications and recording procedures, and in police methods or geographical spread. 13 tables and 5 figures
