Louisville officials noted that the Federal Government has created hope and that Federal funding has assisted the hiring of police officers and developing community policing. The President noted that the crime bill provides funds for hiring 100,000 new police officers across the country, including 16 in Louisville. The government has also reduced complexity and given local communities flexibility in how to train and use the police officers. He noted the importance of community relations to police effectiveness and commented that the greatest problem facing the criminal justice system is the increasing level of juvenile violence. The dialogue also focused on block watch and other community crime prevention efforts, juvenile delinquency prevention, the role of employment in crime prevention, and corrections policies.
