This newsletter presents a report on the 99th International Seminar of the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute (UNAFEI) for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders; the seminar was held from January 30, 1995 to March 2, 1995 and focused on public participation and the prevention of corruption as components of the effective administration of criminal justice.
Abstract
The seminar was prompted by awareness that public participation is crucial to the administration of criminal justice; however, public distrust in criminal justice authorities, often resulting from the abuse of power and the corruption of public officials, is one of the factors that obstructs public participation and cooperation in the administration of justice. The 27 seminar participants came from 22 countries. The seminar programs included individual presentations, general discussion sessions, a series of lectures, and visits to related agencies. Discussions focused on volunteers, private security companies, public education, countermeasures against corruption and abuse of authority, and efforts in specific countries.
