This video uses lecture and dramatization to instruct viewers in how to plan and implement a trauma response plan in the workplace.
Abstract
The dramatization begins as a company executive asks one of his managers to develop a trauma response plan for the company. Such a plan is designed to provide guidelines for the company response and employee behavior in the midst and aftermath of a workplace trauma, defined as any unanticipated, significant event with the potential to harm employees or the organization. The first step involves choosing a crisis management team. An expert comments on what to look for in selecting team members. They should represent a broad spectrum of the organization, including legal and security personnel, and have organizational and planning skills as well as analytical and sensitivity capacities. The video dramatizes the first meeting of the crisis management team. It includes a statement of the team's purpose and member input regarding what should be included in the trauma response plan. The team leader then presents the plan to the chief executive officer. The four major components of the plan are an employee action plan, a protective response strategy, departmental checklists, and a trauma counseling team. The plan contains guidelines and checklists for employees and departments in how to respond to particular types of crises. The trauma counseling team consists of mental health professionals who assist employees in the psychological management of traumatic events in the workplace. The video also dramatizes the implementation of the response plan in a case in which a gunman enters the company building. The implementation encompasses immediate actions to protect employees and the company response in the aftermath to help employees deal with the psychological impact of the trauma. Evaluation and follow-up are also dramatized. Accompanying the video are a leader's guide and a crisis management team workbook to guide the work of the crisis management team.
