The volume is organized into five topical chapters. The first chapter describes patterns of interpersonal violence that result in death. Chapter Two characterizes other types of interpersonal violence: assault, robbery, rape, and carjacking. Chapter Three focuses on groups and situations that are vulnerable or at high risk due to their occupational situation and other factors. Chapter Four describes tangible losses and measurable consequences of violence, including psychological trauma, injury, economic losses, and losses in life expectancy. Chapter Five focuses on public attitudes regarding when violence is justified, how violence influences opinions and behavior, precautions people take to avoid violence, recommended government and community actions, and violence causes.
