This issue focuses on three topics: the evaluation of security personnel, the relation between foreign minorities and the police, and the role of women in the Belgium police force.
Abstract
The first article analyzes the role of periodic interviews between police officers and their supervisors concerning ongoing professional concerns and job performance. The article argues that the introduction of such one-on-one conversations would improve job motivation and performance, even though they require additional effort on the part of the supervisor. The second article criticizes the police's racism and ethnocentricity which has created suspicion and resentment within minorities. Although official representatives of the Belgian police force claim that no discrimination exists, minorities continue to fall victim to stereotyping, insults, and unreasonable searches. The third article introduces a country-wide survey which examines the position of women in the Belgian police force. This survey is especially important since women, who make up only about 3 percent of the force, have experienced little research so far.
