The United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI) wrote letters to criminal justice professionals in the Asia and Pacific region in 1994, asking if they would be willing to provide information on the criminal justice systems of their countries. Agreements were received from 12 countries. All of the authors were selected because of their thorough knowledge of the criminal justice systems in their respective countries. Although UNAFEI outlined the points that might be addressed in the profiles, this form was only for reference, since criminal laws and criminal justice forms and functions vary widely across countries. The 12 countries that participated were Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The topics generally addressed in each country's criminal justice profile are the structure and functions of the criminal justice system (police, prosecutors, courts); and the criminal justice process. The latter may include pretrial proceedings, the trial process, types of punishment, the public defender system, and appeals. Charts and statistics are provided for some of the countries.
