A 1994 survey conducted by the Great Britain Home Office gathered information from retail business and manufacturing companies in England and Wales regarding their experiences of crime in 1993.
Abstract
The survey also asked whether crimes were reported to the police, the losses, and the types of crime prevention measures used. Results revealed that two-thirds of the manufacturers experienced one or more of the crimes covered by the survey. Some businesses attracted a disproportionate amount of crime in that 8 percent of the manufacturers experienced two-thirds of the crimes. Risks for manufacturers were higher than comparable risks for residences, as were the average financial losses per crime. The total cost of property stolen or damaged due to crime was an estimated 275 million pounds in 1993; this represented 0.2 percent of the value of manufactured goods. The impact on profits will be larger. Businesses with 11 or more employees were at the greatest risk of crime. The risks of crime for manufacturing facilities were lower than those for retail facilities, mainly because thefts by customers accounted for a high proportion of retail crime.
