The principles of conflict resolution are taught within the context of other courses, including social studies, language art studies, math, and science. The goals of presenting the tools of conflict resolution to students are to define the positive nature of conflict, to learn conflict/resolution tools, to apply conflict-resolution connections to the curriculum (short-term), and to develop additional conflict/resolution connections to the curriculum (long-term). The material in this manual is for teachers to use in structuring the teaching of conflict- resolution tools to the various targeted grades in the specified subjects (social studies, language art, science, etc.). The conflict-resolution tools taught are brainstorming, questioning, active listening, triggers, ATFRC, and CoRT. Brainstorming is a technique for generating new ideas about a thought or problem, and questioning is a strategy for acquiring, clarifying, and synthesizing information. Active listening is a process of hearing what is being said and understanding the message being sent. Triggers are verbal and nonverbal actions that stimulate confrontation with another person, and ATFRC is a model used to help individuals think through an incident or event. CoRT is a training program for the direct teaching of thinking with emphasis on perception. In addition to providing lessons and graphics for teaching these tools in various classes and at the three grade levels, the manual describes a comprehensive guidance and counseling program.
