This teacher's guide provides instructions to teachers in conducting training for students in mediation, with a view toward establishing a peer mediation program in a school as one component of a larger school program of conflict resolution.
Abstract
The first section is an orientation session for those selected to be peer mediators. The second section focuses on understanding conflict; this includes instruction in the dynamics of conflict and what precipitates and escalates it. A section on communication skills focuses on effective listening behaviors and effective questioning. A section on the mediation process instructs students in the five steps of mediation and provides exercises in mediation role play. Each teaching session contains a statement of the lesson objective, a listing of materials needed, a vocabulary for students, an introduction to the session, descriptions of activities, discussion questions, and a summary of the purpose and implementation of the lesson. Appended supplementary material.
