Program objectives are to show students nonviolent alternatives for dealing with conflict, teach them skills required to apply nonviolent alternatives in resolving conflict in their own lives, increase students' understanding of and appreciation for their own culture and other cultures, and show students they can have a significant role in creating a more peaceful world. Program components include a 20-hour training course for teachers new to the program, regular classroom instruction through a 10-unit curriculum, and classroom visits by expert staff development consultants. During the 1987-88 school year, a student mediation component of the program was established in one school district. Information about program implementation was obtained primarily from the teacher survey. This report discusses the implementation of core program components (teacher training and classroom curriculum implementation), support provided by staff development consultants, the impact of the program on participating teachers and on class/school climate, and the implementation and impact of the student mediation program. Based on the findings, the evaluation recommends more staff development time and more training sessions, parental involvement in the program, and expansion of the program within each participating school and to other schools. 1 table
