This annual collection presents statistics on correctional institutions and inmate movements for the former West German states and, for the first time, for the former East Germany.
Abstract
The statistics for arrival and departure include not only admissions and releases but also inmate movement from one institution to another. First, a graph traces the overall number of German inmates and released inmates from 1961 to 1992. The following section surveys annual inmate arrivals and departures according to gender for each German state (1961-1992). Next, the capacity and actual occupancy of correctional institutions in each German state are surveyed for target years 1987, 1989, 1991, and 1992. A detailed section analyzes inmate departures and arrivals for 1992; the inmates are classified according to age, type of prison sentence (juvenile institution, adult institution), and length of sentence. Inmate arrivals and departures are also given for each German correctional institution. The concluding section presents statistics on inmate arrivals and departures in closed psychiatric institutions and drug rehabilitation centers.
