The Drug and Violent Crime Policy Board, which oversees the funding, has developed a mix of programming for the use of the funds. These programs include enforcement, treatment, alternatives to detention, victim assistance, domestic violence programs, crime prevention programs, and justice information system improvements. The statewide strategy has been developed to use a holistic approach to the prevention and reduction of drug use within the State. Education programs are the building block of the statewide strategy. Funds are used to provide a DARE program in the most populated county in the State. COUNTERACT, a program similar in scope to DARE, is used on a statewide basis. These education programs are complemented with crime prevention projects that include youth awareness, neighborhood crime watch, Adopt-a-Cop, and other programs aimed at youth and senior citizens. The statewide strategy focuses on the enforcement of drug laws. This enforcement is handled by 11 local multijurisdictional task forces. Programs to provide treatment and corrections options are another focus of the statewide strategy. An alternative to detention allows nonviolent offenders the opportunity to return to the community 120 days before release. Funding for services to victims of violent crime and domestic violence is also a priority. This report summarizes the goals and achievements of particular programs under the formula grant program as well as evaluation activities and results.
