Alabama's strategy included a variety of projects in nine of the 23 purpose areas. Multijurisdictional drug law enforcement task forces were the highest priority for funding. The 27 funded multijurisdictional drug task forces continued to operate effectively. Sixty-one percent of Alabama's grant funds have gone toward this program. However, prevention, treatment, and system improvement projects were also funded. Treatment programs to deter long- term chronic drug abuse will continue; these include the Juvenile Offender Substance Abuse Treatment Program and the Alabama Department of Corrections 8-week drug program for inmates. New programs include a drug prosecution and asset forfeiture program and a violent crime task force consisting of representatives of State, local, and Federal agencies. Other programs include the Alabama Jail Assistance Project, which the American Jail Association featured as a model for other states, and the D.A.R.E. program, which received the second highest priority for funding.
