Formula grant funds are used primarily for law enforcement functions. The Vermont Drug Task Force coordinates most of its investigations with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Task Force. Officers from these task forces routinely exchange information about pending cases and potential targets. Task force supervisors keep the resident DEA agent appraised of all significant investigations and work closely with the DEA when Federal charges are anticipated. Multijurisdictional task forces often conduct joint investigations and share intelligence as a matter of course. Formula grant funds have also been used to provide new community initiative programs throughout Vermont to free up needed bed space in correctional centers. In addition, Vermont has automated the 13 State Police stations and several local police agencies through the installation of computer-aided dispatching and records management systems. Funding has also been used for the public defense system, the crime laboratory, and Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE).
