This guide is designed to help community associations establish a summer law internship program in their communities, with the aim of creating summer employment for inner-city high school students in law firms and other law-related agencies.
Abstract
The guide is based on the experiences of such a program in St. Louis, Mo. The program provides interns with an opportunity to learn more about the business world, the legal system, and personal interaction through their work experience. The program also assists interns in reaching their post-high school goals and encourages other professional organizations to adopt a similar program. This guide is organized into four interrelated sections: issues to consider in establishing a summer law internship program, the educational curriculum of the program, the recognition of intern and supervisor accomplishments, and program evaluation. The appendixes contain examples of various forms and documents developed by and used in the program. Preceding each section, several policy or practical questions concerning program orientation are posed. The section then either answers the question or describes how the St. Louis program tried to respond to the issues raised.
