This document presents background reports, press releases, and media articles regarding Federal law enforcement assistance to the District of Columbia starting in 1994.
Abstract
Initiated by the United States Attorney General and other agency leaders at the request of the President in 1993, the program involves assistance from 18 Federal agencies. These agencies are supplying law enforcement officers, vehicles, computers, technical assistance, and training. Contributions are to include 115 vehicles, overtime funds provided through supplemental budget funding and grant programs, approximately 100 uniformed officers from the United States Park Police and the United States Secret Service, a commitment of Federal funds for ballistics examinations on approximately 2,000 firearms seized by the metropolitan police, and the formation of a joint fugitive task force, assistance in conducting background investigations. Additional support includes the provision of registers of discharged military personnel as potential police recruits, and training programs in the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga.
