The volunteer probation officer is primarily responsible for the successful completion of the probationary term of the probationer and must therefore know all procedures involved in probation. This involves the development of a one-to-one helping relationship with a probationer to encourage and foster positive behaviors. The volunteer must have knowledge of and be able to use community resources needed to facilitate rehabilitation of a probationer. Following general information on the 46th District Court, this training manual lists the qualifications of volunteers and the responsibilities of a volunteer. A description of probation and its basic objectives is followed by a discussion of fines, costs, fees, and restitution. Other sections of the manual provide information on probation orders and the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which defines the conditions for and the nature of "youthful trainee status." Sections on specific responsibilities of the volunteer focus on opening a case, scheduling appointments, the first appointment, and closing a probation case. Remaining sections provide information on the duration of probation, community service, bench warrants, the violation-of-probation hearing, and the extension of probation.
