Crime prevention can follow two different priorities, one focused on potential offenders and the other focused on potential victims, and situational and social crime prevention strategies can be adopted in response to these priorities.
Abstract
Situational crime prevention is concerned with potential victims and is generally police-inspired and linked with other police strategies. In social crime prevention, the police department is only one of several agencies involved in targeting and ameliorating crime problems. Crime prevention has always been a key element of policing, and crime prevention activities of the police in England and France are noted and compared. The effectiveness of Neighborhood Watch schemes is addressed, especially in relation to police efforts to re-establish links with local communities. 14 references
