Intended for use by schools and communities, this guide provides descriptive information on the survey instruments available for general use for studying student alcohol and other drug use.
Abstract
The guide urges schools and communities to review these examples before initiating an expensive and time-consuming development project of their own. The text describes the survey instruments using a set of common characteristics, discusses the issues to confront in the process of selecting or developing a survey instrument, and suggests a process and criteria for reviewing the instruments. Schools are advised to use this process to decide whether to adopt or adapt an existing survey or undertake the task of constructing one themselves. Individual sections discuss the topics covered in survey, reliability and validity, the administration of the survey, and the interpretation of results. Twenty-eight survey instruments are described with respect to their author, contact information, year of latest revision, copyright status, cost, grade levels, number of questions, availability of a scoring and reporting service, reliability and validity data, comparative data, and items related to frequency of use.
