Fifty female inmates (undertrials) in India were compared with 50 controls matched for socioeconomic and demographic characteristics to determine the relationship between emotionality or neuroticism and female criminality.
Abstract
The study was prompted by research dating from the 1970's indicating that neuroticism is an important personality dimension related to crime. The participants were interviewed individually and tested on PGI Health Questionnaire N-2, an instrument with 50 items measuring neuroticism and 10 items measuring social desirability. The data were examined by means of t-test analysis and the chi- square test. Results revealed higher neuroticism among the inmates than in the controls. Findings were also consistent with results of Cattell's Factor-C of 16 P.F. questionnaire. The chi-square test indicated that the majority of the inmates were young, uneducated, married, and from the urban lower socioeconomic class. Figures, table, and 24 references
