Abstract
From 1985 through 1994, 32 officers have been killed in the line of duty. Of the total, 62.5 percent were killed by felonious acts, and 37.5 percent were killed as a result of accidents or by negligence. In 1994 three officers were killed feloniously, and two officers were killed accidentally in the line of duty. There were 2,204 officer assaults reported during 1994. Of these, 22.5 percent resulted in injury to an officer. For every 100 officers in the State, the report estimates there were 25.2 officer assaults. One officer was assaulted in the State every 4.0 hours. In 82 percent of the officer assaults in 1994, physical force was used by the assailant, and in 18.1 percent of the cases, a weapon of some type was used. Regarding personnel resource capability, law enforcement agencies reported that 14,571 persons were employed full-time in 1994. Of these, 71.5 percent were sworn officers and 28.5 percent were civilians. In 1994 there were two sworn officers per 1,000 population on a statewide basis. 20 tables and 6 figures
