One section of the directory contains a listing of organizations, including main and branch offices, that provide civil legal assistance to persons unable to retain private counsel, including programs funded wholly or in part by the Legal Services Corporation. Most provide representation in such areas as family law, consumer law, public benefits, and housing law. Another section of the directory provides a listing of organizations, including main and branch offices, that provide criminal representation to persons unable to retain private counsel, including public defender programs and legal services agencies that contain a public defender component. The section on "Special Needs Programs" lists those organizations, including civil legal aid and defender offices, that provide services in a specialized area of law. The legal service agencies listed focus on AIDS/HIV law, arts law, civil liberties/civil rights, death penalty defense, disability protection/advocacy, elder law/senior citizens advocacy, environmental advocacy, gay/lesbian rights, health law, housing law and homelessness advocacy, immigration law, juvenile/child welfare law, lawyer referral programs, Native American rights, prison legal assistance, rural issues and farmworker advocacy, student legal services, veterans legal assistance, and women's issues/family law. Legal support services and State support centers are also listed.
