These statistics on unnatural deaths in Victoria (Australia) for 1993/1994 are designed to facilitate the investigation of such deaths by the coroner.
Abstract
The coroner is responsible for reducing accidents and accidental deaths by holding an inquiry into the cause of death. These statistics, and the system that accompanies them, are designed to assist coroners in their endeavors. A series of tables shows the age and sex classification of unnatural deaths, the intent behind injury-causing unnatural deaths, the manner of death by intent, the employment status of persons who died an unnatural death, factor code by age and gender, and external causes of death. Other tables provide statistics on type of location at which unnatural deaths occurred, the activity being undertaken by the deceased at time of injury, the precipitating breakdown event, how the injury causing death was inflicted (mechanism of injury), and an analysis by instrument of death. Tables also show victim's age at the date of accident by intent, the intent of injury by day of accident and gender; the intent of injury by age group, gender, and calendar month of accident; and context (activity) by mechanism of injury and gender. A number of other tables show data that pertain to accident location, instrument, circumstances of deaths, and victim characteristics. Extensive tables
