This manual presents a flexible, adaptable model for treating juveniles who have been both sexually abused and have abused drugs.
Abstract
The model may be used by social workers, counselors, criminal justice staff, psychologists, and other professionals who work with youth. The model can be used in groups with only dual-disordered clients or for specific clients within a general sexual abuse program. Although the original draft of the manual was created for use with adolescent males in residential care, within a short time, the material was being adapted to preteens and girls. The manual may be used in the development of a comprehensive program for the dual disorder of substance and sex abuse, or sections of the manual may be used for specific client groups. Sections of the manual focus on various types of groups and stages of treatment. These are an adolescent survivors group, a juvenile perpetrators group, a preadolescent survivors group, aftercare, family recovery, and an educational track. Within each section, the treatment process is divided into tasks, with activities to be completed in each task area. Worksheets are placed after descriptions of specific activities. This structure provides a progression through each aspect of recovery. The manual emphasizes the importance of understanding the interaction between sexual and substance abuse; otherwise, the therapist cannot fully support the client's healing, and the risk of client relapse increases.
