This volume presents national statistics regarding progress by 1995 toward achieving the National Education Goals set for the year 2000.
Abstract
The eight goals focus on readiness to learn; school completion; student achievement and citizenship; teacher education and professional development; mathematics and science achievement; adult literacy and lifelong learning; safe, disciplined, and alcohol-free and drug-free schools; and parental participation. The report notes that positive progress has occurred in many areas. The percentage of mothers receiving prenatal care in the first trimester increased from 1990 to 1992, the percentage of children born with one or more health risks declined, the percentages of fourth and eighth graders scoring at proficient or advanced levels on mathematics assessments increased, and more adults reported taking adult education courses. However, overall juvenile drug use increased, more 12th graders reported skipping class in 1994 than in 1990, and more secondary school teachers reported that student misbehavior often interfered with their teaching.
